Choose where you want your page number to be displayed from the Position box by clicking the arrow to the right of the box to display the alternatives and choosing Top of page (Header) or Bottom of page (Footer). You can also choose whether the page number will appear on the left, right or centre from the Alignment box. If you are typing a letter you will not want a page number on your first page and should remove the tick from the box at the bottom left. If you want to set more advanced properties for your page number, click on the Format button and you will see the window below:
You can choose whether your pages are numbered 1, 2, 3.. or a, b, c.. etc. from the Number Format box. If you want to display the chapter number then you must have already set up a multi-level chapter style from the bullets and numbering option on the Format drop-down menu. If you want to start your numbering at a number other than 1 you should click to put a bullet beside the Start at option under Page numbering at the bottom of the window and then enter the page number you want to start with in the box at the bottom of the window. It is possible to create more complicated page numbers and to format them further by editing the page number in the header or footer.
