As well as setting the
style and underlining of text through the Format menu and Font window you can
also use the icons on the Word toolbar. Highlight
the text you want to emphasise and click on the appropriate icon or icons (e.g.
if you want text bold and underlined) to obtain the desired effect. If text has already been emphasised (e.g. bold) you can remove this by
highlighting it and clicking the appropriate icon to turn that emphasising off.
If you have not highlighted any text and click an emphasising icon the
new formatting will be applied to any new text you type. The icons available are shown below:
Bold
Italic
Underline You can also access these
functions by clicking on the Format drop-down menu and choosing Font.
See the section on changing
typeface for an
example of this. If Word's AutoCorrect is set to use
the AutoFormat As You Type facility then you can use the * and _ characters to
format your text by typing them around the text you want formatted: Typing *this is bold* results in this
is bold Typing _this is italic_ results in this
is italic The formatting is automatically
applied as soon as you press a space at the end of the text, it is normally a
lot quicker to do this than to reach for your mouse or press a CTRL key
combination at the beginning and end of the text. You can display the AutoCorrect window
by clicking on Tools -> AutoCorrect. Here is the AutoFormat As You Type
section of the window showing the Replace as you type options for formatting as
italics and bold selected.
