There are several e-mail hoax messages circulating around the world, some of which seem very plausible. Although these do not contain the damaging programs associated with viruses, they can cause e-mail server overload as everybody tries to send the hoax message to everyone else in their address book. Before you send an e-mail to a large number of people, think carefully about how true it is, if it really is a concern then you will probably hear about it on the national news.

Below is the text of a well-known hoax message which has caused many people to delete a legitimate Windows file unnecessarily. DO NOT FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS OF THIS MESSAGE, IT IS NOT TRUE.

I found the little bear in my machine because of that I am sending this message in order for you to find it in your machine. The procedure is very simple:

The objective of this e-mail is to warn all Hotmail users about a new virus that is spreading by MSN Messenger. The name of this virus is jdbgmgr.exe and it is sent automatically by the Messenger and by the address book too. The virus is not detected by McAfee or Norton and it stays quiet for 14 days before damaging the system.

The virus can be cleaned before it deletes the files from your system. In order to eliminate it, it is just necessary to do the following steps:
1. Go to Start, click "Search"
2.- In the "Files or Folders option" write the name jdbgmgr.exe
3.- Be sure that you are searching in the drive "C"
4.- Click "find now"
5.- If the virus is there (it has a little bear-like icon with the name of jdbgmgr.exe DO NOT OPEN IT FOR ANY REASON
6.- Right click and delete it (it will go to the Recycle bin)
7.- Go to the recycle bin and delete it or empty the recycle bin.

IF YOU FIND THE VIRUS IN ALL OF YOUR SYSTEMS SEND THIS MESSAGE TO ALL OF YOUR CONTACTS LOCATED IN YOUR ADDRESS BOOK BEFORE IT CAN CAUSE ANY DAMAGE.

Do not follow any instructions to clean up viruses or delete files without checking with your IT support personnel. You should also be wary of links in e-mails that may take you to web sites containing viruses, don’t follow a link unless you are sure that the content is likely to be safe.

Another form of hoax has been coming out of Africa and many people have lost money by responding to these e-mails. An example is shown below.

Due to the military campaign of LAURENT KABILA to force out the rebels in my country, I and some of my colleagues were instructed by Late President Kabila to go abroad to purchase arms and ammunition worth of Twenty Million, Five Hundred Thousand United States Dollars only (US$20,500,000.00) to fight the rebel group. But when President Kabila was killed in a bloody shoot-out by one of his aide a day before we were schedule to travel out of Congo, We immediately decided to divert the fund into a private security company for safe keeping. The security of the said amount is presently being threatened here following the arrest and seizure of properties of Col.Rasheidi Karesava (One of the aides to Laurent Kabila)a tribesman, and some other Military Personnel from our same tribe, by the new President of the Democratic Republic of Congo, the son of late President Laurent

Kabila, Joseph Kabila. In view of this, we need a reliable and trustworthy foreign partner who can assist us to recieve this money as the beneficiary.
