Percentage Format This can be used to convert a cell?s value to a percentage, note that it does not work out what a value is as a percentage of something else, it just displays a number as the equivalent percentage. If you had the number 0.20 entered in a cell this would be the same as one-fifth or 20%. When the number 0.20 is formatted as a percentage, Excel multiplies the number by 100 and puts a % symbol after it.
